Week 4, Assignment 2: Blog Post

The peer reviewed journal I selected assisted me in acquiring knowledge regarding the effectiveness of the services provided to young children with disabilities in an early childhood setting. Also I learned about the improvements that can be made in order to effectively provide services to young children with disabilities and their families. I was also able to read on the present barriers that IDEA faces such as; access to services, the quality of services, cost and funding, and outcomes.

The search strategies that were helpful in locating the article were Badke’s suggestion which was start broadly than narrow in stages. I also found it beneficial to view the suggested tutorials assigned this week. It assisted me in knowing the difference between a Popular Periodicals vs. Scholarly Publications. The frustration that I experienced this week was finding articles that were relevant to the topic I was researching on. I skimmed through a couple of articles with no results. However, when I changed my keyword search I was able to obtain several relevant articles. What I hope to further conduct research on is how programs are monitoring the progress of children receiving services in an early childhood inclusive setting.

Week 3, Assignment 2 Blog Post

The book that I selected was Early Childhood Intervention: Shaping the Future for Children with Special Needs and Their Families by Christina Groark. The knowledge that I obtained from the book was the importance of early childhood interventions. Also I was able to obtain statistical information regarding special education. The search strategy that was helpful in locating my book was Badke’s 8.1.2 “Get to know the material without reading it all”. I applied the steps the author suggested and was able to narrow my list of books. Since, this was the first time I was searching for electronic books I was glad that I read Brandman University’s Library and Research Guide I was able to obtain valuable information.
On my initial search I had a difficult time finding specific books on my topic because of the key words I selected. However as I applied Badke’s suggestions 3.2.1 “Database basics for keyword searching” I was able to find several books that were relevant to my topic. What I will continue to research on is the challenges of implementing the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act

Week 2: Blog Post

The knowledge that I acquired as I conducted my research was the history of inclusion, the change in terminology, and the variations of preschool inclusive programs. For instance, the change in terminology was encouraged in part by the philosophy that inclusion needed to mean more than only physical placement of children with disabilities in the same classroom (Buysse, & Soukakou, 2011 p.2).

The new search strategies that I used as I conducted my research was using specific search terms related to my topic. Also, I limited my search to domain searches such as .edu. I saved and bookmarked the sources. I enjoyed using the Leatherby Libraries website because it allowed me opportunity to create a folder and narrow my search by selecting full text contents.

This was the first time that I used online reference sources such as Leatherby Libraries and Google scholar I was very excited to further conduct my research from these and other sources. Personally, I think that using the document “Evaluating Information-Applying the CRAAP Test” was very beneficial because I was able to evaluated the sources and narrow down list by relevance and authority. The specific aspect that I wish to further research on is the impact of inclusion on young children with disabilities.

Welcome!

Welcome! My name is Deydalia Fraydealfaro my major is early childhood education. I am currently working towards a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education. I selected this field because I enjoy working with children and their families. This is my third semester at Brandman University.  My career aspirations are to further my education and become a special education teacher.
The specific aspect of the career path I am pursuing that I would like to research on is inclusive education. The reason is because I want to acquire knowledge in this subject especially if I wish to work in the field of special education.
The specific areas that I hope to improve this term are information literacy and information technology. I want to feel comfortable researching on the computer, databases, and other sources that are credible. Many times when I am researching for information I find that I have a challenging time knowing what is credible and what is not. Also, want to improve my skills in using library databases to find scholarly literature. I want to be able to use a wide variety of informational sources to expand my knowledge, ask informed questions, and improve my critical thinking skills.
